<h3><br></h3> <h3 align="center">溫江? 翻譯自英文版<br>（華西原校長(zhǎng)畢啟的孫子 愛(ài)德華.畢啟 E.Beech 供稿）<br></h3><br> <h3 align="center">蔣介石夫婦和理學(xué)院院長(zhǎng)戴謙和夫婦在華西協(xié)合大學(xué) （耶魯大學(xué)圖書(shū)館）</h3> <h3 align="center"></h3><div style="text-align: center;"><h1><b>蔣介石總司令在華西協(xié)合大學(xué)約瑟夫?畢啟博士的回國(guó)歡送會(huì)上的致辭</b></h1><b>1940年3月18日</b><br></div><br><div style="text-align: center;"><b>溫江? 翻譯自英文版</b><br></div>（中文原文未可得，此文系老溫譯自英文，故不宜訛傳。如有損委員長(zhǎng)文字功底，萬(wàn)望諸位見(jiàn)諒。）<br><br> 自中國(guó)打開(kāi)了她的大門，西方國(guó)家的賢哲們就不遠(yuǎn)萬(wàn)里，帶著耶穌基督的愛(ài)，來(lái)此傳播福音，開(kāi)辦學(xué)校。他們的宗教熱情和精神令人倍感欽佩。依吾所見(jiàn)，他們建樹(shù)的最大的功業(yè)，當(dāng)屬創(chuàng)辦了華西協(xié)合大學(xué)。那位盡心盡至，勤奮努力，鑄就這一偉大項(xiàng)目的人，就是華西協(xié)和大學(xué)的校長(zhǎng)，約瑟夫?畢啟博士。<br><br> 早在1904年，他成功地團(tuán)結(jié)了不同教派差會(huì)的代表們，在中國(guó)的西部籌劃籌建這所大學(xué)。依其耐心，盡其努力，以6年的籌劃運(yùn)作，使大學(xué)得以誕生。三年之后，畢啟博士當(dāng)選為這所大學(xué)的校長(zhǎng)。作為辦教的先驅(qū)，畢啟博士的創(chuàng)造性努力，為我們國(guó)家的公民樹(shù)立了典范。他為建?；I集的僅一筆資金數(shù)額，就遠(yuǎn)超五十萬(wàn)美金之巨（譯注：此指霍爾基金會(huì)的捐款。畢啟籌集的華西總基金共達(dá)400余萬(wàn)美元）。用此基金，他得以在校園里營(yíng)建起幾十棟精美的大樓，購(gòu)置了精彩，充足的設(shè)備。華西協(xié)合大學(xué)的醫(yī)科和齒科聞名于我們整個(gè)的國(guó)土。而大學(xué)本身，也已因畢啟博士募集的的眾多杰出學(xué)人及教授們，成為享譽(yù)中外的最偉大的教育中心之一。<br><br> 畢啟博士確實(shí)值得我們的最高欽佩。他的整個(gè)一生，全部貢獻(xiàn)給了這個(gè)國(guó)家的教育?，F(xiàn)在，他就要悄悄地回到他自己的國(guó)家，沒(méi)有絲毫打算分享自己的一份辛勞成果。以這個(gè)國(guó)家的感激之情，我們現(xiàn)在有一份小小的心意，我宣布，中國(guó)政府現(xiàn)在要頒布一項(xiàng)特級(jí)獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)，授予畢啟博士（”捐資興學(xué)”）一級(jí)獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)證書(shū)和紅藍(lán)鑲綬采玉勛章。<br><br> 畢啟博士偉大的人品和精神，以及他在這個(gè)國(guó)家親手創(chuàng)立的不朽事業(yè)，將會(huì)永不消亡。畢啟博士也將會(huì)為中國(guó)學(xué)者和學(xué)生們永遠(yuǎn)銘記。先賢孟子曰：“人有三樂(lè)。得天下英才而教育之” 。 吾以為，畢啟博士就會(huì)享受到這種樂(lè)趣。在他即將離華赴美的前夕，我特別希望送給他這些話，以紀(jì)念我們的感恩，并祝愿他旅程愉快。<br><br>蔣介石的國(guó)璽及簽名<br><br>1940年3月18日，中國(guó)民國(guó)29年。<br> <br>注：采玉勳章：民國(guó)22年12月2日訂頒，以蔣介石之母親「王采玉」命名。勳章以玉比喻君子之德，象徵至高無(wú)上尊榮，是中華民國(guó)最高榮譽(yù)勳章。采玉勳章分若干等級(jí)，其中采玉大勳章為最高級(jí)，中心有玉質(zhì)國(guó)徽，僅授予國(guó)家元首級(jí)人士。其余采玉勳章僅有紅，藍(lán)，白色彩玉而無(wú)國(guó)徽。畢啟校長(zhǎng)所獲為四級(jí)紅藍(lán)鑲綬采玉勛章，為授予國(guó)際人士的最高勳章。<br><br><br> <h3 align="center">華西協(xié)和大學(xué)的校長(zhǎng)，約瑟夫?畢啟夫婦在華西協(xié)合大學(xué)（華西原校長(zhǎng)畢啟孫兒愛(ài)德華.畢啟E.Beech）</h3> 附：蔣介石委員長(zhǎng)的致辭英文稿：<br><br><b> Farewell Address to Dr. Joseph Beech penned by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek （1940-3-18）</b><br><br> Since China opened her door, the sages of the western countries came thousands of miles with the love of Jesus Christ to spread the Gospel, and to open schools. Their religious zeal and spirit are admirable. According to what I have seen, the greatest of these enterprises is the West China Union University. The man who has the patience and who gives the effort to realize this great project is Dr. Joseph Beech, President of the University. <br><br> Early in the year 1904 he succeeded in uniting the representatives of different Missions in planning the establishment of a university in West China, with patience, efforts, and plans for 6 years. The University came into existence, and Dr. Beech was elected President three years later. The creative effort of a pioneer, such as Dr. Beech, is an example to the citizens of this country. The funds he raised amount to far more than half a million dollars gold. Thus he enabled to build up a few tens of fine large buildings on campus, with splendid and adequate equipment. The Medical and Dental College of the West China Union University is famed throughout the land. And the University itself has become one of the greatest centers of learning, with outstanding scholars and professors whom Dr. Beech has engaged both in China and abroad. <br><br> Dr. Beech is indeed worthy of highest admiration. His whole life has been given for the education of this country. He now returns quietly to his own country, without any idea of partaking of the fruits of his labors. As a humble token of gratitude of this country, the Chinese Government has proclaimed a Special Order, and conferred on him the Diploma of the First Class, and the decoration of the Jade Medal. The great personality and spirit of Dr. Beech will be immortal with the enterprise which he has created here in this country. He will be remembered forever by the Chinese scholars and students. “Educating the coming generation,” said Menius, “is the supreme joy of life.” Dr. Beech has enjoyed this kind of pleasure.
