The Essence of Romance

By Han Luheng

"Romance" is a widely used adjective. In today's cultural context, it is often understood as the outward expression of emotional sensitivity—a bouquet of flowers, a love confession, a trip, or a string of poetic phrases. Yet, these are merely superficial manifestations of romance, not its essence. If we examine romance from an ontological perspective, it is, in fact, a conscious awareness of life and a sensitivity to beauty.

One of the key traits that distinguishes humans from other creatures is that we not only live by instinct, but also possess a spiritual consciousness that transcends instinct. Romance is the emotional expression that arises from this spiritual consciousness. It is not praise for any specific thing, but an emotional response to the very act of living beyond mere instinct.

Only by truly loving life can one develop an awareness of beauty—this is the root of romantic feeling. Because we love life, we come to love living, love nature, love others; we cherish friendship, yearn for love, and pursue freedom. This love, when expressed emotionally, becomes romantic behavior; when expressed rationally, it becomes a mark of civilization. In other words, civilization distinguishes humans from other living beings, and romance is the emotional expression of civilization.

Culture nurtures civilization, and civilization shapes culture. Romance cannot exist without both; it is rooted in civilization and carries distinct cultural characteristics in its . Without the soil of culture, romance cannot survive; without the awareness of civilization, romance cannot be born. Romance is by no means a release of wild instinct. Just as poetic language depends on the evolution of linguistic civilization, romance relies on deepened perception of life and the richness of cultural .

Romance does not reject reason; instead, it internalizes reason within a form of emotional . It is a conscious act of free expression, a beautiful emotional connection between individuals and between humanity and nature. It is a “caress of life’s details,” and a “response to the beauty of existence.”

A key feature of romance is that it often transcends reality, expanding the scope of life through imagination. This imagination is not an escape from reality, but a spiritual extension and elevation. Through romance, humans can express infinite emotions within finite reality, imbuing fleeting feelings with timeless meaning. Romance is the starting point of human imagination and creativity, and one of the fundamental traits of human nature.

Therefore, we can say that romance is a “spiritual creation elevated from the instinct for survival.”

Romance is the emotional awareness and free expression of the essence of life. It is rooted in a sense of beauty and characterized by imagination.

Conclusion:

Romance is not a frivolous pose, nor mere embellishment with ornate words, nor an affected display of sentiment. True romance is the natural outpouring of noble human nature—the full expression of a love for life, for living, and for beauty.
