Celestial Glaze Vessel of Universal Benediction

Two ear sculptures with elephant heads.

An elephant sculpture in front of the Worship Hall at the Buddha Memorial Hall in Foguang Mountain, Taiwan.

The Buddha Memorial at Fo Guang Mountain in Kaohsiung.

In June 2017, this work was presented to the Consulate General of Thailand in China as a cultural exchange gift.

Celestial Glaze Vessel of Universal Benediction

In the resplendent constellation of Chinese traditional ceramic art, Jianbai porcelain stands out with its jade-like glaze and dignified elegance. Master Kou Fuping, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Chinese Ceramic Art and a pivotal founder of contemporary Jianbai porcelain, has devoted his life to preserving the cultural DNA of this millennium-old craft. His masterpiece "Auspicious Joy" open-mouthed vase has become an iconic symbol of cross-cultural communication.

This vessel carries profound cultural codes through its minimalist design: The flared mouth resembles unfurling lotus petals, the elongated neck evokes bamboo's noble bearing, while two raised rib patterns encircling the neck-body junction subtly embody the Eastern philosophy of "continuous ascent" and encode blessings for "peace and happiness." Exquisitely carved auspicious motifs on the lower body flow like poetic verses, narrating traditional auspicious imagery.

The ingenious elephant-head double handles manifest multi-layered cultural metaphors. In Chinese tradition, the homophonic association between "elephant" (象), "auspiciousness" (祥), and "governance" (相) conveys tripartite symbolism: simple wishes for good fortune, literati aspirations for political prominence, and visions of national prosperity. This Eastern wisdom serendipitously aligns with Southeast Asian elephant veneration - in Thai culture, elephants are not only sacred totems but embodiments of national spirit. When presented as state gift to the Thai Consulate in China, the artwork facilitated wordless dialogue between civilizations through zoomorphic symbolism.

Deeper cultural cryptography lies in Buddhist connotations. As recurring sacred creatures in Buddhist texts, elephants symbolize both the solemn reincarnation of Buddha and practitioners' transcendent wisdom. This universal value bridging sacred and secular realms earned "Auspicious Joy" permanent enshrinement at Taiwan's Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum. From inheriting traditional craftsmanship to serving as cultural ambassador, this masterpiece epitomizes Jianbai porcelain's metamorphosis from tradition to modernity. It testifies to Chinese civilization's inclusive character, transmitting eternal Eastern aesthetic charm through its luminous glaze to the world.
